1. Next Chapter: Polaris Partners as an Entrepreneur in Residence

I’m excited to announce that I’m joining Polaris Partners as an Entrepreneur in Residence.

I’ve been extremely fortunate to have had an incredibly broad set of experiences over the past few years, culminating in Twitter’s acquisition of Spindle.

Our work at Spindle pushed contextual, social search forward, but we were at the center of so much more: the intersection between businesses and local customers, how organizations use social platforms to reach audiences, how the platforms’ relationships with developers have and are still evolving, and how always-connected mobile devices enable fundamentally new services and experiences. Throughout, I had the distinct honor to work with some of the most talented people I’ll ever know and we built and continuously shipped amazing experiences.

At Microsoft, my experience was even more diverse as I was able to lead efforts in social search and social productivity alongside some incredible leaders at other companies, like Facebook. Beyond my own projects, I was able to witness and help my colleagues as they worked on the future of gaming, productivity, creativity, entertainment, and other projects that are only now being made public.

What’s clear to me is that we’re in the middle of an enormous shift led by always-connected devices and the opportunities are boundless…

Throughout my career, I’ve been obsessed with shipping product and I’ve let momentum and passion lead me from one project to the next. By joining Polaris, I’m excited to pause, reflect on the experiences that I’ve had so far, work with other entrepreneurs and the team at Polaris, and decide where to place a bet on the next 10 to 20 years.

In any company’s journey, there are many supporters (financial and otherwise), but someone has to make the bet first. Dave Barrett was first to see promise in Spindle and first to support us. Only a week after leaving Microsoft, Dave offered us a place to work in Dogpatch. Five months later, he was there with our first term sheet and was ultimately our largest investor. I’m thrilled to work with Dave and the rest of the team at Polaris.

This is a tremendous time to join and learn from the team at Polaris as they’ve just come off a banner year in 2012 and are on track for an amazing 2013. With their diverse investment strategy, there’s an incredible opportunity for me to learn across sectors. With Dogpatch, Polaris has demonstrated their willingness to act boldly, lead, and put their own resources on the line to support the entrepreneurial community. I experienced this firsthand and I’m excited to pay it forward as these efforts will carry Polaris and the community into the future.

To other entrepreneurs out there, I’d love to hear from you and I’m here to help however I can. It’s been a crazy few years and I have much to share. You can reach me at patkinsel(at)gmail(dot)com.

    Excited for the future.
